                                                          Instructions for Administration

                                                          1. Select a time when student will be uninterrupted or distracted.
                                                          2. Student may either type or write the essay by hand. If hand-written, please pay attention to neatness/ legibility.
                                                          3. Give the student the sheet of possible essay topics.
                                                          4. Student is to choose one of the topics for the essay.
                                                          5. Allow the student as much time as needed to complete the essay.
                                                          6. No outside help or resources are allowed to be used.
                                                          7. Essay is to be overseen by a parent or a designated proctor. 
                                                          8. Student should be allowed to preview the Competency Essay point
                                                          9. breakdown sheet prior to the writing session which will allow him/her to be reminded of essential elements of a cohesive, high school-level essay.
                                                          10. Remind the student that the purpose of this requirement is to insure thathe/she is prepared for the type of writing that will be expected of them in college and/or future life. 
                                                          11. Essays can be retaken as many times as needed. Constructive evaluation will be provided for any essay which does not achieve a passing score. 
                                                          12. Scoring is based on a 100-point scale. A passing score is 70 or above.
